Yfoundations is a NSW peak body that seeks to end homelessness in NSW. From its initial inception in 1979, then known as the Youth Refuge Action Group, it has undergone a number of name changes, to the Youth Refuge Association, Youth Accommodation Association and finally to Yfoundations in December 2010. In a way these changes mark the evolution of the response to youth homelessness in Australia, from the ‘youth refuge’ and ‘youth housing’ models of the late 1970s towards the recognition that young people don’t just need a job, a roof and a bed, that that they also need ‘multiple foundations’ in place in order to end their homelessness. Yfoundations has developed diverse key service delivery areas in its effort to advocate for young homeless people and to develop the sector through service capacity development.
